Home Composting
Conditions for Use
Home composting takes place at ambient temperatures (20–30°C) using a backyard compost pile, compost bin, or small-scale system. It typically requires 180 days or less for materials to break down and depends on sufficient air circulation, moisture, and occasional mixing.
Suitable Materials
Only materials certified for home composting (e.g., TÜV OK compost HOME) should be used. These are typically softer and more easily degradable materials such as PBAT, PLA, starch-based plastics, or coated paper. Common applications include food waste bags, tea bags, pet waste bags, and compostable liners for kitchen waste.
When to Use
Home composting is ideal for households with access to outdoor composting areas or bins, environmentally aware communities, small eco-projects, and individuals interested in hands-on waste reduction and soil enrichment.
Industrial Composting
Conditions for Use
Industrial composting requires a controlled facility with high temperatures (50–70°C), high humidity, and sufficient oxygen. It relies on specialized equipment and accelerates decomposition to 90 days or less. Some materials that do not break down in home conditions require this environment to fully degrade.
Suitable Materials
Materials must be certified for industrial composting (e.g., EN 13432, ASTM D6400, TÜV OK compost INDUSTRIAL). These include PLA, PBAT, PBS, and other bioplastics. Typical uses include commercial food packaging, compostable lids, disposable cutlery, and flexible pouches.
When to Use
Industrial composting is best suited for businesses in areas with composting infrastructure, such as supermarkets, food processors, and eco-focused brands looking to meet environmental or ESG targets.
